Sussex Criminals & Victims 1800 to 1825 - CD
Sussex Criminals & Victims 1800 to 1825.
Transcribed by Michael J. Burchall, BA(Hons), FSG, from the original records in the East Sussex Record Office.
Sussex Quarter Sessions of Chichester, Horsham, Lewis, Midhurst & Petworth.
This work is a calendar of all the entries in the Quarter Sessions Order Books for East and West Sussex 1800-25 - excluding the Cinque Ports and the City of Chichester which have separate quarter sessions - that relate primarily to criminal offences that took place in the county. It also includes cases of misdemeanours and nuisances but it excludes all cases relating to the Poor Law which have appeared elsewhere. In those cases where sentences of transportation were imposed, further details can be obtained about who was actually sent. The Friends of the East Sussex Record Office have also indexed criminal cases 1810-50 relating to East Sussex (available at ESRO) and there is a published index to surnames by PBN Publications. For part of the period there are details of the cases of Insolvent Debtors imprisoned in Horsham Gaol who presented petitions to be released.
The number of persons mentioned in this calendar exceeds 30,000. Included are the names of the offenders, the victims and jurors and details of the offences committed with location and in cases of felony the value of the items stolen. Also added are the details of the sentence handed down by the justices that appear at the end of each sessions under the calendars of prisoners in Horsham Gaol, Petworth House of Correction and Lewes House of Correction, and the number of persons in Horsham Gaol, Lewes, Petworth and Battle Houses of Correction are detailed under various headings in 1824 and 1825.
